PhocaLux International Inc. (PhocaLux) incorporated in February 2015 and the company operates a seal processing facility in Fleur-de-Lys, Newfoundland and Labrador. The company is requesting funding to (1) assist with the development and testing of a pilot seal oil filtration system; (2) conduct research and product development for converting seal meat into a nutraceutical powder; and, (3) develop a new process for developing cod liver oil.
For many years, seal oil and seal meat were considered by-products in the industry with a limited number of companies processing those products. The primary goal of this project is to develop processes that will allow PhocaLux to maximize full utilization of a seal, including the pelts, oil and meat. PhocaLux will establish processes focused on developing seal oil and seal meat into commercial-ready products.
The company will also use this project to test a small-scale pilot for processing cod liver oil. This will be a new process for the company and represents early stage activities to determine if a feasible and economical process can be developed for cod liver oil. Increasing the number of products processed will contribute towards creating year-round employment at the processing facility.
