Academic Programs

The Research & Development Corporation’s (RDC) academic programming focuses on building research and development (R&D) capacity in Newfoundland and Labrador’s post-secondary institutions and other not-for-profit research facilities. Academic programs are designed to attract, develop and retain highly-qualified researchers, leverage public sector funding, and support and promote collaborative R&D among academia and business.

Priority areas for funding include: energy, ocean technology, natural resources (minerals & mining, fisheries, aquaculture, forestry, and agriculture), manufacturing, information and communication technologies, and health and life sciences.

LeverageR&D

LeverageR&D attracts public funding for academic-led research and development (R&D) in areas relevant to both industry and the Newfoundland and Labrador economy.

IgniteR&D

IgniteR&D attracts highly-qualified academic researchers and builds new research and development (R&D) capacity in areas relevant to both industry and the Newfoundland and Labrador economy.

CollaborativeR&D

CollaborativeR&D increases research and development (R&D) partnerships and collaboration between academia and industry in areas relevant to the Newfoundland and Labrador economy.

GeoEXPLORE (2011-13)

GeoEXPLORE is a three-year directed research program intended to enhance geoscience research and development (R&D) capacity, collaboration and industry innovation in support of mineral and petroleum exploration and development in Newfoundland and Labrador.

ArcticTECH (2012-14)

ArcticTECH is a three-year directed research program intended to enhance research and development (R&D) capacity, collaboration and industry innovation in support of Arctic technology development.

Ocean Industries Student Research Awards

Ocean Industries Student Research Awards attract highly-qualified students who are interested in pursuing higher education, industry-relevant research and future employment in Newfoundland and Labrador’s ocean industries.

RDC Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards

The Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards provide top Newfoundland and Labrador high school students with the opportunity to attend research-related enrichment programs focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

RDC Mitacs Accelerate Internships provide graduate-level researchers with new research and development opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

R&D Infrastructure

RDC’s academic R&D Infrastructure call was issued in April 2010 and focused on research tools and equipment and R&D platforms (i.e., dedicated research facilities) that encouraged collaboration with industry.
